Reagents
Here we have a compendium of mystical reagents. More may be added in future supplements and stories. Additionally, your storyteller may choose to add additional reagents to any category to match the needs of the story.

Special Leaf
Rosewood
- Rosewood is living wood that binds to its weilder
- Newly harvested Rosewood is Circle 2
- To refine Rosewwood into Circles 3 and 4, you must feed it WaterEarth Essence
- 2 WaterEarth Essence for Circle 3
- 3 additional WaterEarth Essence for Circle 4
- Once you bind Rosewood to you, no other may cultivate it; it operates as Circle 2 for all others
Sinew
Perfume
Mineral
Minerals cover the bounty of the earth, such as gemstones, salts, sands, powders, and other non-organic compounds. Most useful for cultivators are gemstones.
For gemstones, the Circle depends on size, composition, purity, and balance.
- For example, Ruby is the EarthFire Circle 4 gemstone; this would be a large, clear, well-processed ruby
- A smaller or impure Ruby might be Circle 3; a chipped or cracked ruby might be Circle 2
- Talented alchemists (like you!) can precipitate gemstones in their laboratories, though this process is finicky and imperfect
- This is how you may use your Arts and powers to choose a gemstone reagent during Downtime
As such, the gemstones are listed by element, not Circle; samples will vary
AirEarth
- Quartz, Alexandrite, Amethyst, Topaz, Diamond
WaterEarth
- Turqoise, Aquamarine, Opal, Sapphire, Lapis Lazuli
EarthFire
- Tourmaline, Tiger’s eye, Agate, Carnelian, Ruby
LightEarth
- Jade, Amber, Peridot, Citrine
DarkEarth
- Obsidian, shale, Jade, Dragonbone
- Dragonbone refers to polished stones found deep beneath Seln. Pale white, these are said to be the bones of the dragons.
- Jade may reflect either Light or Dark, depending on its surroundings
Special minerals
Pearl
- Pearls act as an alchemical sink, absorbing energies
- Unfortunately, this holds true while in your possession as well!
- While you have a Pearl in your possession, each time you spend Charge, roll 1d10
- On a 1 or 2, your Charge vanishes into the Pearl and has no effect
- Once the Pearl has absorbed 10 Charge, it transforms into a random crystal core. Roll 2d10 on the random elements table for its new form
- If the resulting core would be outside your power (such as pure Earth for a Path student), the pearl instead turns to chalk
Firesand
- Firesand is easy to make: simply salts of earth and fire pounded together
- However, the Kingdom’s version of Firesand is unstable to the point that its creation is banned in most settlements
- Teaspoon-sized quantities might be created by alchemists for use in their work, but the substance is treated with great care and disposed of swiftly if the alchemist wants to have a lab tomorrow
- Somehow, Aufslander pirates have minted a version of Firesand suitable for weaponized combustion. In other words, explosives fit for a gun!
- Though samples have been found in the aftermath of Aufslander attacks, the Firesand reverts to its combustible nature in a day or two. This has prevented study into the secret of its creation
Metal
Precious and rare in Seln Alora, metals are crucial for most forms of weaponry.
ALl metals have Earth as one half of their elemental pairing.
- Light and Dark have no known expressions of metal at C2
Element | Circle | Name |
---|---|---|
AirEarth | 2 | Aluminum |
3 | Platinum | |
4 | Feathersteel | |
WaterEarth | 2 | Copper |
3 | Silver | |
4 | Mythril | |
EarthFire | 2 | Iron |
3 | Titanium | |
4 | Adamantium | |
LightEarth | 2 | - |
3 | Gold | |
4 | Orichalcum | |
DarkEarth | 2 | - |
3 | Coldiron | |
4 | Onyxsteel |
Most metal in Seln is the result of the metal orchards. However, natural deposits can be found
Legends of metals
- When unobserved, feathersteel will float away into the Heavens unless tied down
- Two ancient Aloran clans nearly started a civil war over competing claims:
- One clan claimed that Mythril was formed of the dragon scales of Mera, descended to the world
- The other claimed that Adamantium was formed of the dragon scales of Mera, found in the deep earth
- Adamantium may only be melted once, in its forging, and only in forges hot enough for dragon fire. Once set, the adamantium never again yields to fire…
- Titanium, being of Earth and Fire, mirrors the body, its bones and its living fire. Doctors prize Titanium for their most important implements
- Gold is a foolish metal, possessed of a Fae curse that turns all who possess it to greed and foolishness
- Onyxsteel forms only when a doom lands upon a mortal. The Onyxsteel resonates with that doom, seeking ever to destroy that mortal, and the metal must be Consecrated under the full moon to remove this evil.
Cultivation and metal properties
In our world, we know the physical properties of many of these metals. Iron melts at 1538 C, for example. However, when synthesized into cultivated form, the metals change - sometimes in unpredictable ways!
Here are some rough guidelines to give you an idea of what we’re dealing with
- Cultivated C2 metals are on par with our own industrial processes, even when made of simpler metals such as copper and iron
- Cultivated C3 metals rival the most exotic materials we can produce in labs
- Cultivated C4 metals are legendary, able to withstand impossible stresses like exposure to molten magma
