Challenge Chains
Challenge Chains are an optional organizational method for you to connect your Challenges together in a Scene.
These chains tie together an overall Scene and create a flow chart of possibilities.
Chains
Every Challenge must be tackled by a single character. However, what about complex situations that involve multiple people? Chains to the rescue!
A Chain is a network of Challenges and choices. Like a map, it describes your options. Like a map, more choices may reveal themselves as you proceed!
Each link in a Chain requires either a Challenge, time, or participation; one character fills exactly one link at a time.
The Storyteller creates these Chains; that process will be covered in excruciating detail in the Storyteller section.
Challenge slots
- A Challenge for one character in one element!
- Failure closes that link, forcing you to take a different path
- Disasters can cause ripple effects that worsen the path ahead for everyone!
Time slots
- These slots require no Challenge; you must instead spend your time
- Examples: Clearing underbrush from the road; cleaning an old relic
Participation slots
- These are slots that require no Challenge
- Failure to fill these slots generally leverage Penalties on the other actions
- Examples: Spotters for heavy equipment; helping hands during manual labor
Since only one of you may Challenge for each link, split your forces and tackle as many links as possible!
